Despite current news, consumers are still willing to spend their disposable income on what is generally perceived as luxury items. Prices of computers have reduced in recent years with introductory laptops under £500. For most consumers, this type of product offering is more than sufficient for their needs. A recent report suggest that two thirds of consumers were willing to cut spending on other costs rather than cutting out their Internet connection in their homes. Like mobile phones, an Internet connection is now perceived as something which consumers simply can’t live without. This is another factor which has allowed hardware sales to maintain its momentum, reporting a year-on-year increase of 53%, according to figures from IDC.
Sub £500 priced laptops sold now account for 78% of the market. In a similar way to the use of the video recorder it seems that people are unwilling to live without the latest technology, especially if there are versions available at a price they perceive to be affordable, or at least willing to spend.
The same can be said for mobile phones. This is a market which has enjoyed massive success over many years and shows no sign of diminishing. With new product offerings being released from manufacturers such as Sony Ericsson, Apple, Samsung and LG, demand for our mobile friend has never been greater.
